March 5th Program – Mycoflora Project

The North American Mycoflora Project

Patrick Leacock will discuss the goals and process for IMA to locally begin participation in the North American Mycoflora Project. It is a collaboration between professional mycologists and citizen scientists to identify and map the distribution of macrofungi. It taps into the vast amount of knowledge and data gathered by individuals and mycology clubs, and can provide a new focus for club efforts. IMA members will carry out careful documentation and preparation of specimens (vouchering), mainly from forays. Specimens will be deposited at the Field Museum and other mycology labs with perform DNA sequencing. For more information see MycoFlora.org

Patrick is a professional mycologist, a scientific advisor for IMA, and the liaison with the Field Museum. He has been researching the mushrooms and other fungi of the Chicago Region for 20 years. Patrick is also active with the North American Mycological Association and has run their Voucher Program for 18 years. Patrick’s website is www.MycoGuide.com.
