Fossil Fungi and the Evolution of Mushrooms

Monday, August 4th, 7:30 P.M.

Fungi have been around for more than a billion years, but prehistoric fungi are largely a mystery, in part because fungi fossils are few and far between. In this month’s lecture, paleomycologist Ludo Le Renard, PhD, will show us a variety of fossilized fungi and discuss some aspects of mushroom evolution over geological time.

Curious about biology and nature since childhood, Ludo fell in love with mycology during his undergraduate degree in France. His prior interest in evolutionary biology and paleontology brought him to Canada, to pursue a PhD at the University of British Columbia on fossil fungi. Ludo has been engaged in public education through the Vancouver Mycological Society since 2012, and he has led the education committee since 2024.
