What’s that stuff on the trees? And those splotches of color on the rocks? Most people walk by this every day and never notice these details. Details known as lichens. These iconic symbioses (partnerships) between fungi and photosynthetic microbes are more diverse than mammals and birds combined!  These overlooked forms of diversity are a wonderful example of the fascinating life forms that are under our feet and all around us.  While lichens tend to be viewed as stodgy or boring, they are actually chock full of beauty, drama and intrigue. Moreover, they play important roles in shaping the world around us, and warn us of environmental pollution and changing climates. Join us to learn more about the overlooked but fascinating world of lichens!
